He has coauthored more than 350 publications in international journals as well as 250 book chapters and review articles. Professor Sugiyama’s primary areas of research include the prediction of drug disposition from in vitro biochemical data, and the kinetic and molecular/biochemical analysis of hepatic, brain and intestinal transport of drugs.
Professor Sugiyama most recently received the 2006 John G. Wagner Pfizer Lectureship Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Other awards include: Pharmaceutical Scientist of the Year Award of International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) [1994]; Ebert Prize from the American Pharmaceutical Association [1985]; Scientific Achievement Award from the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Japan (APSTJ) [1995]; Scientific Achievement Award from the "Japanese Society for Xenobiotic Metabolism and Disposition" [2001]; Takeru-Aya Higuchi Prize [1990]; and the Troy Daniels Lecturership from University of California, San Francisco [2000]. He has served as an editorial board member of several international journals, including Editor for Japan of "Pharmaceutical Research" (1992-1996) and "Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences." (1999-present). He has served as the chairman of Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences in FIP (2000-2004), succeeding Dr. Leslie Benet, and chaired the "Pharmaceutical Sciences World Conference", Kyoto, Japan, 2004.
"Professor Sugiyama is regarded worldwide as a thought leader and pioneer in the field of drug transport, and we look forward to working with him to develop and optimize new technologies to evaluate drug transport," commented Dr. Kim Brouwer, Chair of Qualyst's Scientific Advisory Board and Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Pharmacy.
